Official Transcript Submission-If you studied at an American Institution

When You Apply: Upload a Scanned Copy of the Official Transcript to ApplyWeb

All applicants must upload a scanned copy, front and back, of their official student issued transcript/academic record issued by the Registrar’s Office or a verified third party transcript provider service (for example Parchment or National Clearing House), to ApplyWeb for each applicable associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, professional, or doctoral degree earned or in progress. Please make sure the transcripts that you submit with your application are clear and complete.

If you transferred courses to your school from other academic institutions and they include classes in STEM areas of study, please include these official transcripts which reflect the classes and grades for these classes with your application submission.  All official transcripts will be used for the initial application review process by the graduate program committee.

Important:

  • Unofficial transcripts or academic records downloaded from your school’s website or student portal are not acceptable for the application review process and will not be considered.  The re-submission of these documents will delay the application review process.
  • If you are still enrolled in a degree program when you are applying for our program, please submit the most recent in-progress transcript for that degree. After you get the degree from this institution and you are officially admitted to our program, you will need to submit your FINAL official transcript to us.
  • The scanned copy of the official transcript sent by the student is NOT considered an official transcript. It is only for review purposes at the application stage. Once you are offered admission, you should ask your previous institutions to send the official transcript directly to us.
  • U-M Ann Arbor Applicants (Current or Previous Students): Do not submit your U-M Ann Arbor transcript with your application. CoE will obtain your U-M Ann Arbor transcript internally. Please submit all of your official degree transcripts from other academic institutions you attended, including U-M Dearborn or U-M Flint.

Once You Are Offered Admission: Submit an Official Transcript

Once you are officially admitted to the College of Engineering, you have until the end of your first semester to submit an official transcript and documentation from any of your associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, professional, or doctoral degrees earned.

The College of Engineering must receive all of your required official final transcripts / academic documents before you apply to graduate from your CoE program, before a degree will be awarded, or further degree progress can be made. If you’ve submitted all of our required academic documents when you apply to our program, you don’t need to resubmit them to us.

When possible, include a completed Transcript/Academic Record Submission Form with your transcripts. This is a helpful aid in matching your documents to your record and is mandatory for all transcripts submitted in person. Please note that if your program is MEng or DEng program, your program is a College of Engineering program, NOT a Rackham Graduate School program; please DO NOT submit your academic documents to Rackham Graduate School.

Note**: U-M Ann Arbor Applicants (Current or Previous Students): Do not submit your U-M Ann Arbor transcript. CoE will obtain your U-M Ann Arbor transcript internally. However, please submit all your degree transcripts from other institutions you attended, including U-M Dearborn or U-M Flint.

What is an Official Transcript?

What is an official transcript? What is an unofficial transcript?
The official transcript/academic record is sent by the student’s previous school’s Registrar (or Controller of Examinations), the equivalent, or a third party company, eg. Parchment, CSSD.The unofficial transcript/academic record is sent to our office by anyone that is not a Registrar (or Controller of Examinations) or equivalent.
In an official transcript, the recipient is the University of Michigan. In an unofficial transcript, the recipient is not the University of Michigan. For example, it might be the student’s name.
The official transcript is an original document or attested copy with an original institutional seal and signature of the Registrar. The attested copy is issued and signed or stamped by the same office that issues original documents from the degree granting institution. An apostille certification is not necessary. The unofficial transcript is pulled out from the student’s portal, for example ‘Advising Transcript’. The transcript doesn’t have a seal or signature of the Registrar. A “true” copy prepared and signed by a faculty member, city or government official, or notary public. Notarized copies are not acceptable.
The official transcripts are in an unopened envelope that has been sealed and stamped by the issuing institution, if your official transcripts are physical documents. The unofficial transcripts are the physical transcripts that have been opened prior to submitting them to our office.
An evaluation provided by a credential service, for example Educational Credentials Evaluators (ECE) or World Education Services (WES), is not accepted by CoE. Exception: the College of Engineering will accept electronic evaluations from Educational Perspectives (EP).

Find Your Method of Submitting an Official Transcript

Official e-transcripts are strongly preferred. Do not submit the same transcript both electronically and by paper.

Submit Electronically

● If requesting an e-transcript, request the Registrar (or Controller of Examinations) send an electronic transcript to [email protected]. Please be sure to note the College of Engineering at University of Michigan as the receiver, if applicable.

● Documents not sent by the Registrar (or Controller of Examinations) or equivalent are not considered official and will not be accepted. The documents sent directly from your schools should come from an official email address affiliated with your university and include the office/name of the sender.

● The official academic documents from Parchment and National Student Clearinghouse are acceptable. Please make sure that [email protected] is the receiver. If the receiver is “University of Michigan,” the documents might be sent to the U-M undergraduate school or other U-M admission offices. Please note we do not receive notification from the other U-M admission offices when these documents are sent to other admissions offices and these documents can get lost.  The University is not responsible for lost or missing documents.

Submit by Mail

● If you plan to drop off your academic documents at the College of Engineering Office of Student Affairs at 143 Chrysler Center, please email [email protected] and make an appointment with us before you come.

Note**:

Students requiring their original documents returned to them need to make complete copies of the original documents, front and back. The original document and the copy must be brought to the office together. Our staff will compare the two documents and return the original. For convenience, students, faculty, and staff receive an allocation for each term to print at Sites locations and are charged for additional printing .

If you are applying to graduate this semester, the transcript/academic record must be received by the College of Engineering before a degree will be awarded or further degree progress can be made.

Original educational documents will not be returned. All documentation received becomes the property of the University of Michigan and will not be returned.
